There are many famous millionaires and billionaires in today’s world. Most of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors and actresses are millionaires. Then there are people like Oprah who have become brands and are super rich. But then there are entrepreneurs. These are creative and very innovative people who either start their own businesses, or invent a unique product or concept. This list according to Forbes may surprise you. These entrepreneurs are of all different ages and backgrounds. Today we’re concentrating on the Top Ten Richest Entrepreneurs in the World.
Top ten on the list is Mark Zuckerberg. He is one of the computer programmers and Internet entrepreneurs who started Facebook. At only thirty years of age, he is worth 28.5 billion dollars. Not bad for something that he started in his Harvard dorm room. Zuckerberg was made the chairman and chief executive of Facebook, Inc. in April 2013. He is one of the world’s youngest billionaires. When he was twelve, he developed an interest in computers. He created a messaging program called “Zucknet”. His father, a dentist, used the program in his dental office. His family also used it to communicate in the house. He also liked to create computer games and even took some college classes at that young age.
Top nine on the list is Sergey Brin. He is one of the richest men in the world, according to Forbes’s latest Rich List. Brin is seen as the main driving force behind Google Glass. He runs Google X, the secretive division of the Google Company. It focuses on risky projects, such as smart contact lenses, airborne wind turbines and the ill-fated Google Glass. At age forty-one, he is worth 31.8 billion dollars. Brin was born in Moscow, Russia. He and his family emigrated to the United States to escape Jewish persecution in 1979. Later on, he met Larry Page at Stanford University. They invented the most popular search engine and named it Google based on the mathematical term “googol.”
Top eight on the list is Jeff Bezos. He is the fifty-one year old who is the founder and CEO of Amazon.com. He is worth 32 billion dollars. When he was a child, he showed an interest in how things work and turned his parents’ garage into a laboratory. He developed a passion for computers as a teenager and became class valedictorian. Bezos also purchased the Washington Post and he has been looking into delivering packages using drones. Bezos is the 18th richest person (and the 8th richest entrepreneur) in the world. Blue Origin, his commercial space company announced yesterday that it had completed acceptance testing of its BE-3 rocket engine. The BE-3 is capable of 110,000 pounds of thrust and his powered by liquid hydrogen.
Top seven on the list is Larry Page. He is the co-founder of Google. The forty-two year old born in Michigan has a net worth of $32.3 billion. He found Google with Sergey Brin (also on the list) in 1998 which is now the second-most valuable company in the U.S. It surpasses Exxon in market capitalization–that is the total value of the company’s shares. He was interested in computers at age six. His brother showed him how to take things apart. Then he started taking all of the household items apart to see how they worked. By the time he was twelve, he knew he wanted to be the owner of a company one day.
Top six on the list is former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg. His fortune is valued at 33 billion dollars. His latest philanthropic endeavor is with Bill Gates. They have launched a new $4 million fund to help developing countries fight off legal challenges from tobacco companies. The Anti-Tobacco Trade Litigation Fund will help governments that pass tough anti-smoking laws defend against international trade suits and increase public awareness of legal threats from the tobacco industry.
Top five on the list is Sheldon Adelson. His net worth is 38 billion dollars. He is a business magnate, investor, and philanthropist. He is the chief executive officer of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, which owns the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. It is the parent company of Venetian Macao Limited which operates The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino and the Sands Expo and Convention Center. He also owns the Israeli daily newspaper Israel HaYom. He and his business partners held their first COMDEX–a major computer expo in Las Vegas–in 1979.
Top four on the list is Larry Ellison. His net worth is 48 billion dollars. He is one of the first entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley. He is a programmer, internet entrepreneur, businessman and philanthropist. He was the Chief Executive Officer of the software company Oracle Corporation between its creation in 1977 and 2014. He recently announced that Oracle will open a new data center in Japan this year. This will bring the company’s total computing footprint to 22 data centers worldwide. He is a licensed pilot as well.
Top three on the list is Amancio Ortega of Spain whose net worth is 64 billion dollars. He is the richest man in Europe. He is a fashion executive who founded Zara fashion clothing. He is the son of a railway worker and is now the world’s richest retailer. He cofounded the company Zara in 1975 with lingerie and bathrobes he and his former wife made in their home. By the eighties, he had taken Zara throughout Spain and was ready to expand overseas. As his company grew, it expanding aggressively, and he controlled most of his own supply chain.
Top two in the list is Carlos Slim Helú who is worth 72 billion dollars. He is best known as a telecommunications executive. The 74-year-old made his start in Mexico with a brokerage firm he opened after graduating from college. He later on invested in several businesses, and acquired Telmex from the Mexican government in 1990. He is infamously private and rarely does interviews. He has only granted three interviews. It is said that he eats lunch with this employees every day in the company cafeteria. He bought the tallest skyscraper in Spain for 536 million dollars. He is the owner of one of the best luxury hotels in the US located in Miami. It is the The Epic Residences and Hotel. He also owns a 45 million dollar private jet.
Number one on the list is Bill Gates. Not a huge surprise. He has a net worth of 76 billion. The fifty-nine year old businessman, investor, and philanthropist is the co-founder of Mircrosoft. He has also written several books. Gates is one of the well-known entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution. He left the position of chief executive officer of Microsoft in 2000. He remained the chairman and became the chief software architect. His Washington estate took seven years to build and cost 63 million dollars. Today it is said to be worth 123 million dollars. It is named Xanadu 2.0 after the fictional home in the movie “Citizen Kane”. It has 7 bedrooms, 24 bathrooms, six kitchens, and six fireplaces. Each guest is given a microchip when they arrive. They can set it to their preferred temperature and light settings as they move around the mansion.
